As a trainee I undertook a broad spectrum of work including assisting on cases heard at the Royal Courts of Justice, multi-million pound corporate deals and projects such as the rejuvenation of New Street train station.

My first experience of DLA Piper was meeting one of the firm's representatives at a careers fair. It was clear from speaking to them that the firm placed great emphasis on the recruitment of its trainees and their development.

After having completed my Masters degree, in International Economic Law at Warwick University, I worked as a paralegal for a major London practice in the capital markets team, where I was seconded to an investment bank. From this point I knew I wanted a career at a firm that had international scope, both in terms of clients and instructions.

In 2001 I moved to Birmingham for a six-month secondment in our corporate department. I enjoyed it so much I never actually left.

I was attracted to Birmingham by the friendliness and openness of the people in the office – there’s a real lack of stuffiness here.
