William Towell - Solicitor
Litigation and regulatory
Law, Leeds University
I wanted to join a firm that offered truly international reach whilst allowing me to stay in Leeds, the city in which I studied whilst at university. DLA Piper offered the best of both worlds, allowing me to experience top quality work from a great city.
I took the opportunity to work in the litigation department of a major client of the firm. Having only had one week's litigation experience, this was a daunting prospect and I was aware that I needed to show the client that I was capable of producing high quality work. The experience greatly developed my confidence and ability to communicate with all groups of people.
My intake was fairly settled, but you can usually find someone for a beer on a Friday!
All fee-earners I dealt with were very supportive, always taking the time to explain the issues involved in the work I was being asked to carry out. This extended to wider support, such as providing advice regarding qualification.
Excellent access to the countryside – within 30 minutes you can be out in the Yorkshire Dales.
I have been involved with Manuel Bravo, a project assisting failed asylum seekers with their appeal applications. I also advised members of the community attending a free legal advice clinic.
I undertook a three-month secondment with a client in Milton Keynes.
Best - finding out that I had a job on qualification.
Worst - preparing a trial bundle until 3 o'clock in the morning just before Christmas!
