Law and Politics, Hull University
I had always planned on becoming a solicitor but when I finished university at the end of the 1990's recession there weren’t that many training contracts available. After a varied few years in sales, marketing and banking, my wife became pregnant with our first child and I realised that there might never be a better time for me to make a career change.
After three years of part-time study, I applied for a training contract at many practices in the North West. Many of those firms did not seem to see my previous experience as an advantage. DLA Piper did and, in some ways, saw potential in me that I did not see myself. I wanted to work for the best and getting an offer from DLA Piper, the only proper international law firm with an office in Liverpool, was a big boost for my confidence. I did not have to think about it for long before I decided to train at DLA Piper in Liverpool.
Eventually, I qualified into the construction team in our Manchester office which gave me a grounding in the industry that has served me well in the rest of my career. Following a brief spell at another law firm, I was drawn back to Liverpool where both the city and construction were booming and there was plenty of exciting work around, all of the same or higher quality than I had experienced in Manchester.
It had always been my intention to return to the city. Liverpool has a great history and a wonderful atmosphere. The DLA Piper office here similarly has a great history and atmosphere. It also has the sense of confidence that comes from being a regional leader. No-one has airs and graces and you can enjoy a very high standard of work with the benefits of living in a great area.
If you’re currently stuck in an unsatisfying career then I can assure you that it’s never too late to change. DLA Piper is simply interested in hiring people who will bring positive benefits to the firm and our clients. In fact, your background and experience could enhance your chances of a training contract.
