I was extremely impressed with DLA Piper from the outset. At the time they had just merged with two US law firms and were growing rapidly. There aren’t many law firms of this type of calibre and it seemed an exciting place to work. DLA Piper have an impressive client list and have an extremely strong national and international presence.
It was challenging, but the graduate recruitment team was excellent and very helpful. You are obviously feeling both nervous and hopeful but it is also interesting and exciting at the same time. The summer scheme gave me an excellent insight into the law in practice.
The fact that it is so real. You are dealing with actual clients and you are not in a lecture theatre or a seminar room dealing with abstract concepts or make believe scenarios. Everything you do is for someone who is depending on you and not a lecturer who is going to mark your work.
Intelligence is required but communication skills are also key – both written and oral. You are communicating with everyone from internal colleagues to clients. Being organised is also very important, as you will be managing many different matters simultaneously.
Trainees are given a good level of responsibility. Trainees get heavily involved in projects and should be prepared to be pushed so that you achieve your maximum potential.
It is excellent and was one of the factors that really appealed to me about DLA Piper in the Sheffield office. It is obviously very professional and has a good work ethic, but it is also laid back at the same time. Above all it’s extremely friendly.
The social aspect is a lot of fun and I have been on many departmental nights out. As trainees we go out regularly and we also get together with the other the trainees around the UK, for example there is an annual Burns supper in Scotland.
We do quite a lot of CSR and specifically the Master Cutler’s Challenge where we join local businesses raising money for a local hospice. As a team we are cycling the breadth of the UK, doing half an hour each. A few weeks ago we found ourselves gardening at a local primary school. The firm really encourages you to get involved.
What’s so appealing about DLA Piper is that, even though we’re based in the regions, we still get national and international work as well. I can see a long-term future here. The firm recognises and appreciates hard work. They recruit you to retain you and they encourage and support you throughout your career path.
